Family:
I married Marsha Bloomberg in 1986. We have two children. Max is 26, and lives
in Chicago. He works as a Front Office Manager at Sofitel. Julia is 25, and
lives with us in Pleasant Hill, CA. She works for a public relations firm in
San Francisco, Blanc and Otus.
Education: U.C. Berkeley 1963 B.A.; S.F. State 1972 M.A.; Golden Gate Law 1980
J.D.
Work: I have been a labor and employer attorney since 1982, and my office is in
Oakland. Marsha is a legal administrator in Oakland.
Travel: We have been to Europe and Hawaii a lot since 1982. Marsha and I went
to Israel in April 2013 and had a great time. We usually go to Lodi in the Fall
to see the Sand Hill cranes. We like to get to the Sierras at least once a
year, and to Napa and the coast as often as possible.
Memories: Ashford blowing milk out of his nose while laughing in the cafeteria.
Making fun of the veins in Mr. Reynold's nose (and finding those same veins in
my nose not too many years later.)
A May picnic in the San Mateo hills before graduation, with a bunch Siringer's
students, so grown up, so young. Hitchhiking with Flanders all over California,
picking peaches, knocking almonds, making less money than the bracero family
camped next to us.
Working for San Mateo Typewriter Company and San Bruno Typewriter Company while
going to Hillsdale. Alex Robillard gave me his job. Racing through Hillsborough
in my Dad's Nash Rambler being chased by two Capuchino football players in a
Corvette after we flipped them off at Hal's. We got away.
Getting kicked out of Hillsdale by Mr. Kristovich until I shaved my beard.
Knocking down a kid in typing class because he called me a "kike";
getting punched in the jaw by Davis after I told him to mind his own
business.
Having my picture in the paper with Betsy Seitz. Pretending to go to the Senior
Prom with Julie Ann and meeting up with Pam - then Pam's father showed up and
took her home. Plenty of drama, and plenty of humor.
Going off to Cal while other guys went off to Viet Nam. And all that followed.
The National Guard in Berkeley, demonstrations, riots, getting busted in San
Francisco, getting busted on the way back from Mexico, New York City
demonstrations.
Having a pistol pulled on me in Dallas and a shotgun in Alabama, fighting fire
ants in the South, working in factories and for all the major corporations in
S.F. as a computer guy, walking picket lines, strange drives across the
country, stand-up comedy, making films, and living in Big Sur. And, I remember
Sara Spainhower, who had the look of an unstoppable woman.
The Virtues of Hillsdale: A good academic public education. I took Latin for
cryin' out loud. I now realize that the teachers I didn't like were liked by
people who were not like me. It was a little melting pot for a lot of different
Christian faiths and a few secular humanists. There have been a lot prinicipals
in California worse than Ray Allee. It was kind of rowdy, but under a
reasonable amount of control Except for some poor students, it lacked
diversity, but history has fixed that. My kids went to Bishop O'Dowd where my
son played lacrosse and my daughter was a cheerleader. I work as a lawyer and a
mediator, and live in Pleasant Hill. Who's a square? Thanks Hillsdale.
